Richard Boruta October 11, 1967 – August 9th, 2017
Biathlon Canada recognizes with great sadness the passing of Richard Boruta, Head Coach of the Biathlon Alberta Training Centre, on August 9th, 2017.
Richard was a long-time Canmore resident and prominent biathlon coach. As the first and only Head Coach of the Biathlon Alberta Training Centre, he enjoyed tremendous success over the past seven years, graduating several athletes to the Canadian Senior National Team. In addition, his program contributed numerous athletes each season to the Canadian Youth/Junior Team – his success culminating with a World Junior Championship in 2017.
Richard trained as a coach in his native Czech Republic and was Biathlon Canada’s National Team coach from 2002 through 2006. During his time in Canmore he also coached with Rocky Mountain Racers, in addition to starting the biathlonschool program. For the past several seasons, Richard led Canada’s team at the Youth/Junior World Championships and led teams on many IBU Cup tours. Earlier this year, Richard was named Biathlon Canada’s Male Coach of the Year – for the third time in his career – and was also honoured provincially with a Coaching Recognition Award from Alberta Sport Connection.
Richard will be remembered for his calm demeanour, technical expertise, strong leadership abilities, and a subtle sense of humour. Leading teams on tours all over the world, Richard was always organized, thorough, and approachable.
Richard will be deeply missed by the Canadian biathlon community. Biathlon Canada extends its sincere condolences to Richard’s family – wife Kamila and children Michal, Thomas and Lukas.
A memorial service for Richard will be held at 5:00pm Friday, August 18th at the Canmore Nordic Centre Day Lodge.
Messages of condolence to the family may be sent to email@example.com and will be forwarded to Kamila.
