Biathlon Canada Approved Online Instruction Activities and Protocols

Many Biathlon Canada members are looking for ways to train and stay connected to their biathlon community during the COVID-19 pandemic. The information below outlines online activities that are approved by our insurer at this time. Please read through them carefully and ensure you are in compliance.

 

Note: our insurance policy does include a Contagion Exclusion. This applies to claims and/or losses related to COVID-19. For example, if someone decided to ignore COVID-19 health orders to stay inside or not practice physical distancing and something happened where they were infected and/or got someone else infected, then a lawsuit against this individual would not be covered through our policy. If anything changes, we will update Division Presidents and all registered clubs (on Zone 4) via email and will post on our website.

 

Approved Online Activities

*If your Division/Club would like to suggest an activity for approval, please send an email to hambery@biathloncanada.ca with at least one week notice so that we can seek approval through our insurer. 

 

–    Online dry-land training (minor equipment, which could include exercise equipment or similar props): Online, led by a coach for a workout at home (through an online video platform).

–    Dry-land training on your own (minor equipment, which could include exercise equipment or similar props + running/biking/skiing/roller skiing/striding with poles): Program prescribed by your biathlon club/Division/Biathlon Canada but done on your own time.

–    Shooting training: Dry firing at home: online, led by a coach for a workout at home. **Please see specifics below.

–    Shooting training: Dry firing at home: Program prescribed by your biathlon club/Division/Biathlon Canada but done on your own time. **Please see specifics below.

–    Theory sessions (nutrition, mental performance, video analysis etc.) work: on your own time but program prescribed by the coach OR group sessions done online.

 

Use common sense. Do not try activities for the first time during an online training session. 

 

 

 

**Dry-firing specific training (no ammo)

Do not participate in dry-firing in this capacity if you have never done it before.

  1. Approved activities for dry-firing:
    1. Practicing range/position procedures – including rifle on and off back and in and out of shooting position.
    2. Holding in positions to gain strength and stability.
    3. Principles of shooting practice – Natural alignment, sight picture, breath control, trigger control, and aiming process drills.
  2. Requirements: All participants must have Canadian Firearms Safety Course (CFSC) certification and follow the Canadian Firearms Act and these guidelines:

The firearm user must:

  • Act in accordance with the Government of Canada’s Firearms Act, Firearms in Canada continue to be regulated by the Firearms Act and Part III of the Criminal Code.
  • Follow operation of the firearm in accordance with safe handling techniques and have an awareness of manufacturers’ specifications and safety features.
  • Have a Canadian Firearms Safety Course (CFSC) Certificate and implement the Vital Four ACTS and PROVE It Safe

 

Vital Four ACTS:

  • Assume every firearm is loaded.
    • Regard any firearm as a potential danger.
  • Control the muzzle direction at all times.
    • Identify the safest available muzzle direction.
    • Keep the firearm pointed in the safest available direction.
    • The muzzle of a firearm should not be pointed towards yourself or any other person.
  • Trigger finger must be kept off the trigger and out of the trigger guard.
    • Do NOT put your finger on the trigger or inside the trigger guard when you pick up a firearm.
  • See that the firearm is unloaded – PROVE it safe.
    • Do not handle the firearm unless you can properly PROVE it safe.
    • Check to see that both chamber and magazine are empty. Do this every time you handle a firearm, for any reason.
    • Pass or accept only open and unloaded firearms. It is an essential rule to adopt.

 

PROVE It Safe:

  • Point the firearm in the safest available direction.
  • Remove all ammunition.
  • Observe the chamber(s).
  • Verify the feeding path.
  • Examine the bore for obstructions (visually or with a rod/bore snake).

 

  1. Coach Requirement: There must be one certified coach present for any of these online sessions (NCCP) who has a Firearms Safety Certificate.4. Maximum Participants: All participants must be observable on one screen clearly.

 

 

Compliance

 

In order to be compliant under our policy, Divisions and Clubs must adhere to the following:

  • All individuals participating must be members with Biathlon Canada for the 2020-2021 registration period and attendance be recorded/logged by the coach.
  • All practice safety protocols must be implemented; have an emergency action plan, ensure a safe space(s), equipment and safety check(s).
  • All instruction is carried out or hosted by a Biathlon Canada member NCCP certified coach. Other appropriately trained/certified people within their scope of practice may add to the session under the supervision of that coach.
  • Use delivery tools that include the use of controlled, multi-screen video conferencing programs such as Skype, Microsoft Teams, GoToMeeting, Adobe Connect, Google Hangout, or Zoom (ZOOMUS).
    • Publicly accessible broadcast tools such as Facebook Live, YouTube, etc. and pre-recorded videos are not acceptable methods of delivering virtual/online training

 

Guidelines:

  • When offering virtual/online training the Rule of Two still applies! Having two trained and screened coaches present is best practice, click HERE for more information. In addition, please review this information on applying the Rule of Two in a Virtual Setting.
  • Report all injuries according to your injury report protocols
  • Coaches note the following information before the class and maintain it on file according to your information storage protocols:
  1. Coaches and their remote locations.
  2. Date and time of the session
  3. Session Content (activities to be conducted)
  4. Number of Participants (ensure all participants/coaches are members before the start of the session)
  5. Conduct a post-session report as your protocols require
